My time in Vancouver has been an incredible experience!

I've made lifelong friends from all over the world, explored stunning places like Stanley Park and Granville Island, and shared amazing moments with them. Staying at the school's accommodation added to the fun with great amenities and a welcoming environment, making it easy to connect with other students. I'm so thankful for the friendships I've built at the language school, which continue even now back home in Germany. Thank you for making my time here so unforgettable!

Which visa do I need as a language student?

Language students in Canada generally need one of the following visas, depending on the length and nature of their studies:

  1. Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): Students from visa-exempt countries who plan to study for six months or less need an eTA to enter Canada by air. It's a straightforward process that can be completed online.
  2. Study Permit: For language courses longer than six months, students must apply for a Study Permit. This permit allows them to stay in Canada for the duration of their course. Students may also need a Visitor Visa or an eTA, depending on their nationality.
  3. Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa): If the language course lasts six months or less, students from visa-required countries must apply for a Visitor Visa. This allows them to enter Canada for their studies and possibly travel within the country.

Yes, you can work while studying in Canada as an international student, but there are specific conditions you need to meet:

  1. Study Permit Requirements: Your study permit must include a condition that allows you to work on or off-campus.
  2. Full-Time Student Status: You must be a full-time student at a designated learning institution (DLI).
  3. Eligible Programs: You must be enrolled in an academic, vocational, or professional training program that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate and is at least six months in duration.
  4. Work Hours: You can work up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks, such as winter and summer holidays, or spring break.
  5. Social Insurance Number (SIN): You must have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work in Canada.

Working while studying can provide valuable work experience, help you meet new people, and support you financially. However, be sure to adhere to the conditions of your study permit and any guidelines provided by your institution.

This hassle-free option ensures a smooth and comfortable start to your stay in Vancouver.

What is the cost of living in Canada?

The cost of living in Canada, particularly in Vancouver, is relatively high compared to other cities. In Vancouver, you might spend between CAD 1,200 to CAD 2,000 per month on rent, utilities, food, and transportation.

For comparison, in San Diego, you can expect a similar range, with average monthly costs around USD 1,500 to USD 2,500. Los Angeles generally has a higher cost of living, with monthly expenses ranging from USD 1,800 to USD 3,000, depending on the neighborhood and lifestyle.

While all three cities offer vibrant environments and numerous amenities, Vancouver’s cost of living is comparable to San Diego, but slightly lower than Los Angeles. It’s important to consider these factors when planning your budget and living arrangements.
